What to Expect at Your Notary Appointment (In Person or Online)

If you’ve never worked with a notary before, it’s completely normal to feel unsure about what to expect.

Do you need to bring anything?

How long does it take?

What actually happens during the appointment?

The good news is-getting a document notarized is a simple and smooth process, especially when you know what to expect ahead of time.

At Notaries by Deb, my goal is to make every appointment easy, comfortable, and stress-free-whether we meet in person or online.

Before Your Appointment: What You’ll Need

To make sure everything goes smoothly, here are a few things to have ready:

  • A valid, government-issued photo ID (not expired)

  • The document(s) you need notarized

  • All pages of the document (even if only one page needs a stamp)

  • Do NOT sign the document ahead of time-this must be done in front of the notary

For Remote Online Notarization (RON), you’ll also need:

  • A smartphone, tablet, or computer

  • A strong internet connection

  • A quiet, well-lit space

During the Appointment: Step-by-Step

Here’s what typically happens during your session:

  1. Identity Verification - I will confirm your identity using your ID (or secure online verification if remote).

  2. Document Review - I’ll quickly look over your document to ensure it’s complete and ready.

  3. Signing the Document - You’ll sign the document iin my presence (or live on camera for RON)

  4. Notarization - I’ll apply my official notary seal and complete the notarial certificate.

And that’s it!! Most appointments take just a few minutes.

If You Choose Online Notarization

Remote notarization is becoming more popular - and for good reason.

With online notarization, you can:

  • Sign documents from anywhere

  • Avoid travel and scheduling hassles

  • Get things done quickly and securely

I’ll guide you through the entire process, step-by-step, so you never feel lost or overwhelmed.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Here are a few things that can delay your appoinment:

  • Signing the document before the appointment

  • Bringing an expired ID

  • Missing pages from your document

  • Not having proper witnesses (if required)

A little preparation goes a long way.

My Goal As Your Notary

I understand that many notarizations involve important life moments-legal decisions, family matters, or financial steps.

That’s why I focus on:

  • Creating a calm and welcoming experience

  • Explaining things clearly

  • Making sure you feel confident every step of the way

You’re not just a nother appointment-you’re someone I’m here to help.
