How to Prepare for a Notary Appointment (In-Person or Onlie)

Whether iti’s y our first time working with a notary or you’ve done it before, knowing how to prepare for your appointment can make the entire process faster, smoother, and stress-free.

At Notaries by Deb, I want every client to feel confident and prepared-so here’s exactly what you need to know before your appointment.

  1. Bring a Valid Photo Id. This is the most important step. A notary must verify your identity before completing any notarization. Acceptable forms of ID typically include: Driver’s License, State-issued ID, Passport. Make sure your ID is current (not expired) and matches the name on the document.

  2. Do Not Sign the Document Ahead of Time. It might seem helpful to sign early-but don’t! The notary must witness your signature in most cases. Signing beforehand could mean you’ll need to redo the document.

  3. Ensure Your Document Is Complete. Before your appointment: fill in all required fields, double-check names and dates, make sure no pages are missing. A notary cannot notarize incomplete documents, so this step is key.

  4. Having All Signers Present. If multiple people need to sign, everyone must be present at the time of notarization. For Remote Online Notarization (RON), each signer will need: their own device (phone, tablet or computer), Internet access, identity verification readiness.

  5. Be Aware of What a Notary Can and Cannot Do. A notary is there to verify identity and witness signatures-not to provide legal advice. If you have questions about what your document means, it’s best to consult an attorney before your appointment.

  6. Prepare for Remote Online Notarization (RON). If you’re choosing an online appointment, here are a few extra tips: test your camera and microphone, sit in a well-lit area, have your ID ready for upload/verification, use a stable internet connection. Being prepared ensures your session goes quickly and without delays.

  7. Know What to Expect. During your appointment, your notary will: verify your identity, confirm your willingness to sign, witness your signature, complete the notarial certificate. The process is simple-and usually takes just a few minutes!
